Airline Plastics Renovates Corporate Office

Airlite Plastics is renovating its corporate headquarters at 6110 Abbott Drive near Eppley Airfield. According to a building permit application, Airlite plans to invest $1 million to create new divisions and office space in the building. Airlite was founded in Omaha and has more than 1,100 employees in six North American locations. It manufactures prepackaged food containers. – Isaiah Ang

Sugared Ledge Bakery Closing Elkhorn Location

Sugared Ledge Bakery will close its Elkhorn shop at 920 North 204th Avenue on August 24. The business, which temporarily closed in February for renovations, said it will not renew its lease due to space limitations but is seeking a larger location. – Nicole Buntgen

Bobo’s Noodles and Dumplings Coming to The Yard

Bobo’s Noodles and Dumplings will open at 812 North 14th Street in the former Session Room space on the southeast corner of the first floor at 1415 @ The Yard Apartments, according to Oak Investment Real Estate. The 3,600 sq. ft. restaurant has not announced an opening date. – Isaiah Ang

Teledyne Prepares for New Omaha Location

Teledyne CETAC Technologies is renovating a light industrial space at 11105 Mockingbird Drive. The location was previously occupied by Cybotic Health Technologies. Teledyne is headquartered in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and provides products and services for elemental analysis of samples ranging from drinking water to radioactive waste. Its current Omaha site is at 14306 Industrial Road. – Isaiah Ang

Bowlero Rebrands Elkhorn Location as Lucky Strike

Bowlero has rebranded its Elkhorn bowling entertainment center at 20902 Cumberland Drive as Lucky Strike, following the Virginia-based brand’s 2023 acquisition. The company’s Council Bluffs location at 1900 Madison Avenue is also slated to rebrand as part of a two-year rollout. – Nicole Buntgen

Cracker Barrel Unveils New Logo

Cracker Barrel revealed a new text-only logo on August 21 removing the man-and-barrel image and the “Old Country Store” subtitle. Part of its “All the More” branding campaign, the update echoes the chain’s original 1969 logo before the barrel and man were added in 1977. Cracker Barrel has Omaha-area locations in Council Bluffs and Papillion. – Nicole Buntgen

North Omaha Nonprofit Finds a New Home

YouTurn, a north Omaha nonprofit violence prevention organization, announced plans to move from 34th & Ames Avenue into a larger, 7,300 sq. ft. space near 32nd & Dodge Street. The move will make space for the planned North High School football stadium and upgrades to the Butler Gast YMCA. – Mark Champion

Infill Housing Project Planned for 56th & Frances Street

Sierra Homes has plans for an in-fill development at 56th & Frances Street. The City Council approved a planned unit redevelopment for the 13,000 sq. ft. vacant parcel. Plans show that the property will be subdivided into six lots each with 2-story, single-family houses with garages. Each home will be approximately 1,500 sq. ft. and have 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. – Isaiah Ang

Revival House Expanding to Legacy

Revival House will open a second Omaha location in January 2026 at 16939 Wright Street in the former Parliament Pub space the the Shoppes at Legacy. The cocktail bar, owned by Flagship Restaurant Group, opened its first Omaha spot in June at 3737 Farnam Street in the Blackstone District. – Nicole Buntgen

Tipsy Sisters Opening Bel Air Plaza Location

Tipsy Sisters, a mobile bar concept, is opening a brick-and-mortar spot at 12100 West Center Road in Bel Air Plaza. The new venue will feature a full bar and patio, while the mobile bar continues to operate on weekends at Heartland of America Park and Gene Leahy Mall. – Nicole Buntgen

Creighton Welcomes Largest Freshman Class in History

Creighton University has welcomed 1,250 freshmen, its largest incoming class ever. Thirty-seven percent of them ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school classes, and nearly 50 percent graduated with a 4.0 GPA or higher. The class is geographically diverse with 36 percent coming from more than 400 miles away. Nebraska is the most represented home state with 294 students, while Minnesota is second with 188. Other states sending more than 50 freshmen to Creighton this year include Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri and Hawaii.

Duchesne Academy Constructing $43 Million Athletic Complex

Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, a private, all-girls high school, is building an athletic complex on its Midtown campus near 36th & Burt Street. The state-of-the-art facility is tailored to serve female athletes and includes a competition gym holding 1,200 fans with an indoor track as well as a turf soccer field with a geothermal system installed below ground. Amenities include a locker room, weight room and commons area with a commercial-grade kitchen. Fundraising has surpassed 81 percent of the school’s $43 million goal.

Wick & Paper Studio Opens in Millwork Commons

Wick & Paper Studio has opened in a boutique space inside The Dizzy Mule building at 1252 Izard Plaza. The building is part of Millwork Commons, a burgeoning urban district north of Charles Schwab Field. Wick & Paper Studio is the shared brick-and-mortar home of Telle & Resa Candle Co. and J.Diane Creations. Telle & Resa sells handcrafted soy wax candles. J.Diane Creations provides creative services, including handmade greeting cards, custom art and planning for events.

VIP Lounge Reopens in New Location

VIP Lounge has reopened in its new space at 8505 Frederick Street in a space once occupied by Gaeta’s restaurant and For the Wild Birds store. VIP Lounge had operated at 9001 Arbor Street for 61 years.

Blood Bank Opens in Eagle Run

The Nebraska Community Blood Bank opened its Eagle Run Donor Center July 29th in Omaha near 132nd & Birch Street, accepting whole blood, plasma, double red cells and platelets. Executive Director Cheryl Warholoski described it as a vital resource for rapid response to hospital needs, especially amid a severe summer blood shortage.

Lincoln Developer Plans Apartment Project in Council Bluffs

The Council Bluffs Planning Board reviewed a plan from Lincoln-based Hoppe Development for a 2.54-acre site next to the First Avenue Trail bounded by 28th and 29th streets and 2nd Avenue. Hoppe plans to build an 89-unit, mixed-income, residential complex. The city had previously approved other proposals from Brinshore Development and White Lotus Group. In late 2024, Hoppe was chosen as the developer from the third Request for Proposal. Hoppe’s plan is named West End Roost and consists of eight buildings ranging from 4-plex buildings to a 3-story, 47-unit building. In addition to traditional residential units, Hoppe plans several live-work units in a building adjacent to the trail. – Isaiah Ang

Starbucks Opens in Papillion’s Tower District

Starbucks Coffee has opened a store in Papillion’s Tower District, a 120-acre, mixed-use project northwest of 84th & Highway 370 in Papillion. The Tower District will also be home to Panera Bread, Casey’s, Pinnacle Bank, AutoZone and GreenState Credit Union. The development gets its name for its proximity to Papillion’s iconic water tower.

OPPD Plans to Add 3,000 Megawatts of Additional Capacity

The Omaha Public Power District continues to expand its electrical power generation capacities to keep up with current and future growth. By the end of the decade, OPPD plans to add more than 3000 megawatts in additional generation while diversifying its energy portfolio. Earlier this summer, OPPD announced that the new Turtle Creek Station was officially operational. Located near 168th & Fairview Road in Sarpy County, the station currently has two dual-fuel combustion turbines, with a combined output of 450 megawatts. OPPD is adding a third turbine which is expected to be completed in 2027. – Isaiah Ang

Pa Más Kitchen Hosting Grand Re-Opening

Pa Más Kitchen at 220 South 31st Avenue in Midtown Crossing is holding a grand re-opening August 15-17 after a remodel. The restaurant reopened July 9 with brunch, extended hours and an evening bar. Habitat for Humanity Plans Council Bluffs Townhome Development

Habitat for Humanity is planning a 7-unit townhome development on a .6-acre site near downtown Council Bluffs. The property is located in the north half of the block bounded by 1st and Willow avenues and South 7th and 8th streets. Each 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom townhome will have a private garage with access from a public alley. - Isaiah Ang

Izzy’s Pizza Retires Mobile Pizza Bus

Izzy’s Pizza has officially retired its mobile pizza bus, which launched in Las Vegas in 2019 and moved to Omaha in 2022. The Detroit-style pizzeria will now focus solely on its brick-and-mortar location at 522 South 24th Street, open Wednesday through Saturday. - Nicole Buntgen

Southwest Airlines Adds Nonstop Flights from Omaha to NYC & Miami

Southwest Airlines announced that it will add nonstop flight service from Omaha’s Eppley Airfield to New York City LaGuardia and Miami International Airport. The New York service begins March 5, 2026, while the Miami route starts March 7. American and Delta already offer nonstops between Omaha and New York. American currently offers seasonal nonstops to Miami. Southwest is Eppley’s biggest carrier and currently offers nonstops to Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Las Vegas, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, San Diego, St. Louis, Tampa and Washington, D.C.

Omaha Housing Authority Plans to Renovate 13-Story Tower

The Omaha Housing Authority is planning major renovations to Pine Tower Apartments at 1500 Pine Street. Built in 1965, the 13-story apartment building has 144 units. According to a building permit, studio units will be converted to 1-bedroom apartments. Additionally, kitchens, bathrooms, finishes and common areas will be updated. Some mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades are planned. The project will cost $8.6 million. - Isaiah Ang

New Vegan Restaurant Coming to Blackstone District

Fifth House, a local vegan restaurant, plans to open soon in the former Get Real Sandwiches space at 3901 Farnam Street in the Blackstone District. The restaurant’s tagline is “the vegan joint of your dreams.”

St. Louis-Based Construction Firm Opens Omaha Office

ARCO National Construction, a St. Louis-based, design-build, general contractor, has opened an Omaha office at 11717 Nicholas Street, Suite 110. ARCO has built several buildings in Nebraska over the years, including distribution, cold storage, manufacturing, self-storage and entertainment projects. Most recently, ARCO completed a cold storage expansion project for Performance Food Group in Omaha.

Redfield Building Launches Coffee Shop Pop-Ups

The Redfield Building at 1901 Howard Street has started a weekly coffee shop pop-up series in its lobby, formerly home to Kochava Coffee. Cedar Creek Coffee & Art is this week’s vendor through August 15 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Future vendors will be announced soon. - Nicole Buntgen

Fareway to Build Grocery Store in Far Southwest Omaha

Fareway Meat & Grocery plans to build a store in Iron Bluff, a mixed-use development southwest of 204th & F Street. Iron Bluff will also be home to a future Omaha Public Library branch, Elkhorn Public Schools’ middle and elementary schools, an assisted living facility, an apartment complex and space for other commercial businesses. Boone, Iowa-based Fareway has six existing Omaha-area stores.

Dumpling Empire Opens Second Location

Dumpling Empire has opened at 15825 West Maple Road in the former Dickey’s Barbecue Pit space. The Chinese restaurant also operates at 5413 South 72nd Street. Hours are Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (closed Tuesdays) and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. - Nicole Buntgen

Tipico Helado Opens Old Market Ice Cream Shop

Tipico Helado opened an Old Market store a couple days ago in the former Niche space at 1209 Howard Street. Tipico Helado has existing locations at 15623 West Dodge Road, 5210 South 21st Street and 453 North Main Street in Fremont. The Mexican ice cream shop offers more than 50 flavors and also operates throughout the metro through mobile trailers. – Nicole Buntgen

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Plans September Opening

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is now projected to open in September at 3430 North 167th Street southeast of 168th & West Maple Road. The project, contracted by Perkins-Critser Construction, has been somewhat delayed due to revisions requested by Popeyes’ corporate office. Omaha-based Eat Out Now is the owner.

Car Dealership Takes Over Former Johnny Sortino’s building

The former Johnny Sortino’s Pizza building at 7880 L Street is now home to Metro Motors Auto Sales, a locally owned used car dealership with an existing location at 7802 Military Avenue. Sortino’s permanently closed back on May 31st after 60 years in business.

The Tenant in Benson Rebrands as Little Riot

The Tenant, a rooftop bar that opened in August 2024 at 6201 Maple Street in Benson, has rebranded as Little Riot. According to its website, the business is now a pizzeria and rooftop bar offering pizza, wings, ribs, salads and ribeye. The Tenant had operated as an Asian-inspired smokehouse known for its craft cocktails and Rooftop Rosé Garden. – Nicole Buntgen

New Coffee Table Book Documents Aksarben History

The Durham Museum has announced a new coffee table book, entitled Ak-Sar-Ben: Looking Back & Leading Onward, which captures more than a century of Ak-Sar-Ben’s influence on Nebraska through parades, pageantry, philanthropy and progress. Produced in partnership with the Aksarben Foundation and the museum’s On Track Guild, the book is a visual and narrative journey featuring hundreds of rarely seen photographs and newly uncovered stories, all made possible by The Durham’s commitment to preserving Nebraska’s rich cultural heritage. – Joe Champion

Let It Fly Taking Over The City Pub Space

The City Pub closed July 31 at 7861 Main Street in La Vista City Centre. The gastrobar, which opened in late 2023, was known for casual fare and a rooftop patio. Let It Fly, an upscale sports bar, plans to open in the space later this month. Let If Fly has existing locations in The Capitol District downtown and at 1311 South 203rd Street in west Omaha. – Nicole Buntgen

Developer Plans to Build Assisted Living Near 70th & Grover

West Development, the developer of the recently opened Parallel Apartments project – part of the MH Landing – old CoCo Key Redevelopment site northeast of 72nd & Grover Street – presented a plan to the Omaha Planning Board to build a $30 million assisted living and memory care facility. The proposed 3-story building would be south of the Parallel Apartments and have 100 units, with 20 units for memory care residents. The developers requested approval of $3.3 million in Tax Increment Financing. – Isaiah Ang

North Omaha Visitors Celebrates Soft Opening

The North Omaha Visitor’s Center, a nonprofit organization and venue aiming to cultivate tourism and promote the rich history, culture and economic vibrancy of north Omaha, held a soft opening on August 1 near 24th & Burdette Street. The hub for both tourists and locals will feature a gallery, tours and events, as well as a coffee shop and gift shop when it opens to the public in September. – Mark Champion

Current Mutual of Omaha Headquarters Building to Be Preserved

Lanoha Development plans to preserve and repurpose the existing Mutual of Omaha building after the insurance giant moves downtown in 2026, according to Jason Lanoha, CEO. Mutual’s 285-foot-tall current building is at 33rd & Dodge Street. Lanoha is developing the new 44-story headquarters at 14th Farnam Street and will redevelop the current/old campus. There had been some concern that the iconic Midtown tower would have to come down, but Lanoha announced on today’s Grow Omaha show that the current tower will be incorporated into redevelopment plans.

Kids Indoor Play Park Expands Near 144th & Center

The recently opened Kids Indoor Play Park at 14445 West Center Road is already planning to expand. The Omaha Planning Board approved KIPP’s application for an amendment to a conditional use permit that originally allowed an indoor recreation area. The amendment will allow for an 8,700 sq. ft. outdoor play area that will be built on the southeast side of the building. The outdoor space may include a refreshments bar selling food and drinks. - Isaiah Ang

Hy-Vee Launches One-Hour Delivery in Omaha Area

Hy-Vee plans to offer one-hour online delivery 24 hours a day in the Omaha area. Hy-Vee plans to fulfill and distribute online orders from its warehouse at 5710 South 144th Street, a former Super Saver grocery store. Online orders will be sorted and bagged at the warehouse then delivered to individual stores for customer pickup. Hy-Vee is partnering with a currently unnamed third-party vendor to provide this service. The Omaha Planning Board approved an amendment to a conditional use permit to allow for distribution from this property. - Isaiah Ang
